Background of the Chatham-Kent Drug Awareness Council:

The history of the Chatham-Kent Drug Awareness Council dates back to April of 1988, when passionate community members saw the potential in building a Drug Awareness Council.

Years later in 2007, the Westover Treatment Centre approached United Way to take the lead in developing a local drug strategy.

After a community based Drug Strategy forum was held, along with membership in the Municipal Drug Strategy Co-ordinators Network in 2008, the Framework for a Drug Strategy for Chatham-Kent was published.

This Framework can be viewed here.

With the appointment of a project coordinator in 2012, their work in the community has blossomed.

They have developed three additional Drug Awareness Councils within Chatham-Kent, namely in Blenheim, Dresden, and Wallaceburg, have hosted 3 community forums, set a stage for individuals living or have lived the experience to share their journey, as well as partner with our local councillors, police services, and many other community agencies for various education initiatives.
