A tough, defensive game pitted the hometown Wallaceburg Senior ‘B’ Thrashers against the Owen Sound North Stars on Sunday evening.

Although the Thrashers did out shoot the visiting North Stars 38-32, they only managed to find twine five times, in a 7-5 loss.

“Defense wins you championships,” said Gord Lilley, the Thrashers head coach.

“We just have to be a little smarter, but we will work on that in practice.”

William Trudeau led the Thrashers with one goal and two helpers for three points. Kyle Childerhose, Mike Myers, Wes Kewley, and Trevor Lean all added goals.

Jesse Gross, Anthony Blaisdell, Colin McDowall, and Jordan Van Damme each got one assist.

“We have the skill to play with anyone in the league,” Lilley said.

“We have the size, the strength, the speed, and we just have to have lacrosse smarts. It’s the mental errors that are costing us the wins.”

The Thrashers kept their penalty minutes to only 25 and their opponent’s shots to only 32, but their offence just wasn’t there, Lilley said.

“We get those 10 to 15 minute brain cramps where we get selfish on offence, and have poor clock management. Our defense works hard to get us the ball and we run the ball down and shoot with 25 seconds left on the shot clock, we can’t be doing that.”

Lilley did note how well the defense did play and acknowledged goalie Tyler Glebes exceptional play.

The Thrashers will will host Owen Sound in their next home game on Sunday, May 8 at 4 p.m.
