Corunna’s Derek Drouin captures Olympic gold

It was a golden night for Corunna’s Derek Drouin.

The men’s high jump competition belonged to Drouin who dominated the field enroute to the gold medal Tuesday evening at the Rio Olympics.

Social media erupted following Drouins win.

“Drouin got the gold!!!! It’s amazing to have a gold medal winner come from so close to home!” said Shanah Martin-McCready on Facebook.

“Gold Gold Gold!!!! Whooooo hooooo!!!” wrote Karri Bouman.

“Yahoo gold for Drouin!!!” said Sherry Alves.

“Drouin destroys the competition and brings home the gold!! Really exciting high jump final when a local guy is battling for a medal!!” said Kyle Lozon.

“What a show Drouin ! Nothing but Gold ! ‪#‎proudtobecanadian‬,” wrote Cal Vankerkhoven.

Drouin, who was born on March 6, 1990 is the reigning world champion in high jump and now the 2016 Olympic Champion, according to Wikipedia.

He previously won a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London as well as the bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics.

With that jump of 2.38m he set a national record in the high jump for Canada.

In his college career he was a five time NCAA champion in the high jump for the Indiana Hoosiers.
