The Mayor of Chatham-Kent and the MPP in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex have both penned letters to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change about water well testing in Chatham-Kent.

Subsequently, a Wallaceburg councillor has pulled a notice of motion from the table, which had been slated to be presented at the April 24 council meeting.

“In order to get our request into the Minister in a timely manner both the Mayor and MPP Monte McNaughton have written letters asking the Minister to do exactly what my motion for April 24th would have done,” said Jeff Wesley.

“I am pleased that the request has been able to go out (quickly) on this very important matter. Thank you to Mayor Hope and Monte for their assistance.”

Wesley had entered a notice of motion calling for the Minister of the Environment to immediately convene an open public meeting to fully discuss the ongoing and proposed testing of local water wells.

“So that all local water well owners, wind farms, Water Wells First, council and the general public are fully aware of what testing is being done and/or should be done,” he said.

Wesley added he wanted the Ministry to provide concrete directions to insure local water well owners do not pay the cost of testing of their wells, and if they have already, to be reimbursed.

Wesley said these letters will provide clarity to well owners on what tests are being done or should be done.

It also makes sure all required tests are at no cost to every well owner, Wesley said.

“Plus it gets the (Ministry of Environment and Climate Change) involved locally.”
