4-way stop being removed in Wallaceburg

After being delayed for a few months, the 4-way stop at the Murray Street and Reaume Avenue intersection is set to be removed.

Municipal officials say the activation of the pedestrian crossover (PXO) at the intersection is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 1, 2017.

“During this time, the stop signs on Murray Street at Reaume Avenue will be removed and the stop signs on Reaume Avenue at Murray Street will remain in place,” Municipal officials said in a press release.

“This intersection will no longer be an all-way stop.”

Wallaceburg Coun. Jeff Wesley entered a successful motion at back in May to delay the move until the road construction is completed on McNaughton Avenue.

“It was something that has been brought forward to our attention from overwhelming community support,” Wesley said.

“I can give you a number of ways in how the community has supported what they would like to see done, but it is basically coming down to a safety concern. A very informal poll done by the Sydenham Current had 482 people respond to this survey and 81% fully supported leaving the 4-way stop there until after construction on McNaughton is completed.”

Wesley said Reaume Avenue has become busy due to the construction on McNaughton and the pending construction on Murray Street.

Chatham-Kent officials said a PXO is a new way for pedestrians to easily and safely cross the road.

“Drivers and cyclists must stop and yield to pedestrians intending to cross the road, and wait for them to completely reach the other side before driving through,” Municipal officials stated.

Steps on how to use a PXO are as follows:

– Press the crossing/push button to activate the flashing lights.

– Indicate your intention to cross to drivers and cyclists on the road and make eye contact before you enter the roadway.

– Proceed with crossing when you feel it is safe to do so.

Chatham-Kent council had originally approved the move back in August of last year.

  1. Lol have a six year old read and follow those instructions!!! Better have an officer there ticketing people who start moving before the child is totally across the street!! Wallaceburg you are so behind the times!! Cities do not use these pxo with out street lights!!!

  2. if some child gets hit at this crossing we can look to our council for their smart ideas wait till a young one hits the button and steps out with out looking first remember these are childreni hope iam wrong we will see

  3. Been a 2 way for less then 12 hours and already had an accident!! I know the councils obly concern is Chatham, but come on!! This is rediculous!! How about instead of treating us like we are idiots, listen to us when we say something!! Now guve us back our 4 way and stop trying to screw us over!!!

  4. How many more accidents is this town going to withstands, before its someone’s child getting injured? Put the intersection back to the way it was, too many people just don’t understand how to properly use this type of intersection, there was nothing wrong with the 4 way stop, I believe so do many others in Wallaceburg, that the 4 way stop is much needed over this nonsense! Time to start a petition to put it back the way it was
