Meet local author and artist at Wallaceburg’s library

When Wallaceburg writer and editor John Gardiner was planning to publish his first major literary collection earlier this year, there was one crucial ingredient that he thought absolutely needed to be part of the project – his daughter Rebecca’s art work.

John and Rebecca Gardiner (Aaron Hall)

The only problem was that Rebecca is a very busy young woman with three small children, a full-time job and a house to run. Still, her father insists he wouldn’t have published the book without her.

“I had to keep after her to make sure she stayed on track,” said John Gardiner in a press release.

“But the result is completely mind blowing.”

So, when Memories for Sale was published in mid-May, the book contained 14 pieces of Rebecca’s artwork, including a striking cover illustration called, ‘Gawd’ after the short novella in the collection.

Now, the Wallaceburg Branch of Chatham-Kent Public Library will be displaying some of the original artwork from Memories for Sale.

A number of the pieces, including the cover, will be exhibited at the Wallaceburg Branch beginning on Thursday, September 14.

An opening reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. on that date and both author John Gardiner and visual artist Rebecca Gardiner will be there to talk about the work.

John will also read a few brief selections from Memories for Sale and signed copies of the book will be available for purchase.

This event is open to everyone and is free to attend.

Helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Ontario

Ontario is helping businesses buy low-carbon vehicles and technologies that reduce emissions and foster sustainable development — and the province is seeking public input.

This investment is part of Ontario’s Climate Change Action Plan and is funded by proceeds from the province’s cap on pollution and carbon market.

The new program will provide rebates towards the purchase of alternative-fuel vehicles and fuel-saving technologies, making it more affordable for local businesses to own and operate greener vehicles.

Eligible vehicles and devices being considered under the program include electric and natural gas-powered trucks, aerodynamic devices, anti-idling devices and trailer refrigeration units.

The program will encourage more businesses to make the switch to low-carbon vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, a sector that generates about a third of Ontario’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

“Creating a low-carbon economy is vital to the province’s continued economic success,” stated Daiene Vernile, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation.

“The Green Commercial Vehicle Program will help businesses invest in fuel-saving technologies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We’re committed to working with our partners and local businesses to modernize the way we do business and keep Ontario an attractive and sustainable place to work.”

More details:

– The province is seeking feedback on the proposed Green Commercial Vehicle Program design, eligibility criteria, application and funding process, data collection, and innovation pilots. The program is posted for public review and will be open for comment until October 6, 2017.

– In 2015, the transportation sector accounted for 33 per cent of Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions. In that same year, 31 per cent of Ontario’s total transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions came from the road-based movement of freight.

– Greenhouse gas emissions from road-based movement of freight in Ontario have doubled from 1990 to 2014.
The Climate Change Action Plan and carbon market form the backbone of Ontario’s strategy to cut greenhouse gas pollution to 15 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020, 37 per cent by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050. The government will report on the plan’s implementation annually and review the plan at least every five years.

Retired Sarnia Police Constable Peter Kindrachuk and retired Sarnia Firefighter Kyle McKelvie will be travelling to San Antonio, Texas to deliver a much needed supply of diapers and baby supplies to victims and families stricken by Hurricane Harvey.

The pair recently reached out to friends and family addressing this initiative, and in a very short time, they have managed to nearly fill a trailer full of baby needs.

They were also reaching out to the community hoping to have the rest of this trailer filled with diapers of all sizes before leaving for Texas.
