Charges laid after March 17 dog attack in Wallaceburg

Charges have been laid after an alleged dog attack in Wallaceburg on March 17.

Jason Hamm, manager of animal control services, said in a press release as previously released, on March 17, 2018 around 5 p.m. an 8-year-old, male bull terrier allegedly attacked a Shih Tzu, Poodle mix while it was tethered outside it’s home.

Nearby witnesses intervened and attempted to stop the attack, Hamm says.

The Shih Tzu mix sustained injuries to his neck and ear area.

He was taken to an emergency veterinarian office for his injuries that night.

However, he is now home, stable and recovering from his injuries, Hamm said.

Through investigation it was discovered that the bull terrier in question was deemed potentially dangerous under Chatham-Kent’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-law in 2015.

He is required to wear a muzzle when off the dog owners property and at the time of the attack was allegedly not, Hamm says.

“On March 21, 2018 a search warrant was executed by Animal Control, the bull terrier was identified and seized,” Hamm said in a press release.

“A 36-year-old Wallaceburg man has been charged with multiple charges under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act as well as Chatham-Kent’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-law. He has a court date of May 16, 2018.”
