Amazing amount of wildlife in our local waterways

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

It’s funny how many comments you hear about water quality around here.

I don’t mean drinking water, but that IS a concern to some.

I’m talking about the rivers, lake and creek waters, all often the butt of jokes.

I’ll confess to having made a few cracks myself.

However, after a gorgeous hot day, lots of sun, a few wispy clouds and four hours on the waterways in my boat, I started thinking that maybe, just maybe, someone forgot to tell the local wildlife about how crappy their environment is.

We saw parent swans with cygnets, Canada Goose parents with goslings, ducks galore, cormorants.

We saw turtles galore basking in the sun, fish were jumping everywhere.

We saw muskrats, river otters, tons of other bird species and even a bald eagle.

Maybe I’ll stop making cracks about the waterways here.

Seriously, how bad can it be when so much life exists over the water, on the water and even in it?

And… I’ve never seen a single ‘don’t swim’ advisory on our local rivers and creeks.

I saw people, young and old, swimming in the Snye today.

I repeat… how bad can it be?
