Update: Gordon St. blaze causes $80,000 damage

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services (CKFES) officials have released more information about the Saturday night, February 16, blaze in Wallaceburg.

Fire officials say firefighters from Station #3 in Wallaceburg and Station #2 in Chatham responded to a working structure fire at a single-family dwelling at on Gordon Street.

The call came in at 7:11 p.m.

“Upon arrival, the crews found a working fire,” fire officials said in a media release.

“The fire was contained to an upper bedroom in the house. An offensive attack knocked the fire down quickly. The crews remained on scene to check for fire extension and to preform salvage and overhaul duties.”

Damage is pegged at an estimated $80,000, while $400,000 worth of property was saved.

The cause has been ruled accidental, fire officials say.

“Smoke alarms save lives,” fire officials stated.

“Install working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas and test them monthly. If battery operated, replace the battery twice annually when you change your clocks.”
