Honour Thy Father

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I have to admit it, I have a favourite day of the year.

It’s not Christmas, opening day of rec soccer season or even my birthday.

It’s today, Father’s Day.

This wasn’t always the case but after becoming a dad a number of years ago things changed for me.

I like to tell people that many can call me “Brian” or “Pastor” or “Mr. Horrobin” but only five people can call me “dad.”

Fathers’ Day, like Mothers’ Day, is a day we should celebrate.

One of the Ten Commandments says to “honour your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with you…”

My father was a good man who taught me many things.

He died quite suddenly over 24 years ago while I was away at seminary finishing up my second year of studies.

As a father myself, I now know what he knew, that being a dad carries with it both honour and great responsibility.

I take this role seriously and pray every day to be a better husband and father.

Whether or not you had a great father it is important to realize that we have a heavenly Father who is perfect and does not make the mistakes that earthly fathers make.

Why not spend some time with Him today over at His house.

He will be expecting you and will be glad you came.
