‘Santa’s’ personal highlight this past season

By Glen Turner – Special to the Sydenham Current

People who know me know that I’ve been doing theatre for more than 40 years.

I’ve had the joys of being a singer, actor, director, producer, stage manager – and ran my own dinner theatre company for many years.

I was lucky enough to have played Tevye in Fiddler, Oscar Madison in Odd Couple, Emil Debeque in South Pacific, Caiaphas in Superstar, Ali Hakim in Oklahoma! Twice… and of course, King Henry, in my own King’s Feast… for 29 years!

The list goes on and on.

The most recent fave role is, you guessed it, SANTA!

I’ve been able to be Saint Nick for families, friends, companies, and did seven mornings in December at CKXS.

Santa got to talk to kids directly from the studio and thanks again to Greg Hetherington.

Sure, standing ovations are great on the stage, but very little compares to the faces of kids when Santa enters a room… sometimes unexpectedly.

Their wishes are so sincere, their joy of the season is infectious.

The personal highlight for me this year?

A 6-year-old boy on Christmas Day (at First Baptist) just blew me away.

I asked him “What’s the best thing about Christmas?”

I expected to hear “PRESENTS!”

He said “spending time with my whole family.”

That kinda sums up for me what it’s all about.

I still get goose bumps thinking about it.
