Aamjiwnaang declares local state of emergency due to ‘excessive discharge’ of benzene

Aamjiwnaang First Nation declared a local state of emergency on Thursday, April 25, 2024 due to ‘excessive discharge’ of benzene.

“Today, April 25, 2024, in accordance with Aamjiwnaang’s Emergency Response Plan and on the recommendation of the Aamjiwnaang Emergency Control Group (AECG), Chief Christopher Plain has declared a local state of emergency at Aamjiwnaang due to the continuous and excessive discharge of the chemical compound benzene from INEOS Styrolution’s facility located at 872 Tashmoo Ave, Sarnia, Ontario,” Aamjiwnaang officials stated.

“An emergency is defined as a situation or imminent situation that affects the health, safety, welfare, and property of a community and requires a prompt, controlled, and coordinated response by one or more agencies, exceeding the normal day-to-day capabilities of a community.”

Aamjiwnaang officials added: “If you and your family feel unsafe in your home, please contact Ashley Jackson at 519-328-6653, and she will assist in making further accommodations for you. While declaring a Local State of Emergency is a serious step, Aamjiwnaang is taking this action to enhance our preparedness and ensure we have adequate resources available should further action be necessary.
