The 4th annual Wallaceburg Relay For Life is right around the corner.

The fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society, which is being held May 30, was officially kicked in Wallaceburg recently at the Black Goose

“The committee has been actively coming up with new ideas and looking at old favourites again for Relay For Life in Wallaceburg,” said Rachel MacLeod, fundraising coordinator. “Everyone is going to be coming together again to celebrate, remember and fight back. We’re looking forward to the event up ahead and nice warmer weather.”

MacLeod said the committee has a few goals they’re striving for.

“For us goals are in respect to how many people can we get involved in the event, how many people can we reach out to, can we touch, how many luminaries can around the track, how many cancer survivours are walking in a survivours victory lap,” she said. “We do have a financial goal of $44,000. We’d like to have 20 teams participating, 300 luminaries lining the track and if we can have 50 cancer survivours in the cancer survivour victory lap, that would be a great celebration.”

MacLeod past Relay events in Wallaceburg have been quite successful.

“We really try to emphasize what the community has to offer and involve that in part of our ceremonies,” she said. “When it comes to looking at new, we have a lot of great committee members on board with a lot of great ideas, ready to move forward. We’re going to be doing something a little bit different with our ceremonies this year. We hope to keep everyone busy and engaged for 12 hours.”

MacLeod it was nice see about 30 people out for the kick-off.

“It was great of The Black Goose to be able to give us that space to do that,” she said. “To Paul Bilodeau, our event chair and the committee members to support the kick off. It was great to be able to release the balloons either in memory or in honour of someone, knowing that those biodegradable balloons are going to be landing somewhere and someone is going to be reading it.”

The event runs from the evening of May 30 to the morning of May 31.
