Sydenham Campus changes underway

With the Emergency Department intact, some other changes are under way at the Sydenham Campus of the Chatham-Kent Alliance in Wallaceburg.

Then leadership committee for the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance provided a detailed update of the organization’s operating plan at a board meeting this week.

Officials say the ambulatory care renovation and relocation at the Sydenham Campus is now complete. Efforts are now underway to review current practices and search for cost savings through consolidation and contract reviews.

The new medicine unit renovations are underway and are expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Also, some contingency plans have been put in place to help with delays surrounding the implementation of interim long-term care beds at the Sydenham Campus. This includes:

1) A crisis designation has been developed, which allows patients at the Sydenham Campus to have priority access to available long-term care beds in the community.

2) Additional beds in Chatham will be maintained until the interim beds are available.

3) Work is continuing with the CCAC to place patients in their long-term care facility of choice to reduce unnecessary patient moves between both campuses. CKHA officials said it is anticipated that fewer than 15 patients will move to the Chatham Campus as a result of consolidation. This process should be completed by the end of the month.

CKHA officials say the decommissioning of the laboratory instruments is complete, while the expansion of point of care testing has “gone extremely well” with a positive response from the physicians and staff.

An update was also provided on the !magine Project.

A letter was sent in mid-February, inquiring about the status of the pre-capital submission for the Chatham Care Centre and the Stage 1 a/b submission for the Wallaceburg Campus of Care project.
