Water festival looking to educate kids

water1

The Chatham-Kent & Lambton Children’s Water Festival has been celebrated annually during the fifth week of the grade school year since it began in 2007.

After skipping 2013 to make way for the War of 1812 Bicentennial, it’s back on track in 2014 for another great event September 30, thru October 2nd, at the C.M. Wilson Conservation Area, just southwest of Chatham.

The festival will have influenced over 10,000 students, including both the elementary students who attend and the high school students who provide volunteer assistance, over the past eight years.

Unless you had a child in grades four/five, this amazing educational experience could have escaped your notice as it’s reserved for schools and volunteers.

There is no public access.

Students attend one of the three full day sessions to participate in 42 activity centres which not only address water conservation, protection, and science, but how water was handled in the 1800’s. Students are encouraged to consider how much water they use when brushing their teeth or taking a shower.

They investigate the impacts of pollution and contaminants. They marvel at the effort required to use water for laundry in 1840’s, and for fire suppression by bucket brigade.

What better age to embrace the value of water and one’s impact upon it? Sponsors and Volunteers demonstrate commitment with grants, donations of cash and materials, and hours of guidance and preparation.

In 2014, the Chatham-Kent & Lambton Children’s Water Festival seeks Supporters to fund the event. There are many sponsorship levels: by organization; by child, class or activity; or by school.
