An inaugural lacrosse event could be making a stop in Wallaceburg.

Jason Nantais, a volunteer with Wallaceburg Minor Lacrosse, provided a deputation to council last night requesting support to help bring the “Rock The Box” lacrosse tour to Wallaceburg.

Nantais said the tour is stopping at multiple locations in the United States and is being organized by North American Sports Group. The plan is to set up multiple, portable lacrosse floors across a field, and run a 5-on-5 tournament for a range of age-groups, from 13 to adult.

“We want to make Wallaceburg an annual stop on this tour,” he said.

Nantais added the idea would be hold the tournaments at Kinsmen Park in Wallaceburg on Aug. 23 and 24.

“(The dates) had no lacrosse events in Michigan or Ontario,” he said.

Nantais said box lacrosse is just starting to gain popularity in the United States.

“We’re decades ahead of them all in box lacrosse,” Nantais said.

Nantais said he has been told by North American Sports Group that the event could draw somewhere between 500 and 1,100 people into the community.

“We have a lot of connections in Michigan… we’re hoping to draw some teams in from there,” he said.

Nantais said no financial support is needed from the municipality.

Wallaceburg Coun. Sheldon Parsons entered a successful notice of motion for the municipality to lend a hand to the group, through advice and consultation from tourism staff and senior officials.
