Your Hometown Deli in Wallaceburg is doing their part to raise funds for the community with a little help from Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham.

Kevin Blake, co-owner of the Wallaceburg deli, said he approached the Wallaceburg District Secondary School graduate and veteran NFL kicker to hear his ideas for what kind of sandwich he would like.

“I was thinking of a way where we could raise money for our community,” Blake said. “I was trying to come up with a sandwich and I thought, why not get a hold of Shaun Suisham and see what sort of things he likes. He was willing and cooperative. He told me the things he likes and between us we came up with a sandwich called ‘The Kicker.’”

Blake said Suisham wanted a healthy choice for the sandwich, but wanted to ensure it had a “Canadian” touch.

“It’s a panini bun, an avocado spread is what he asked for because it is healthy for you, jalapeno turkey, which is a could lean meat and of course he asked to get the Canadian bacon in there,” Blake said. “We had to make sure it had bacon in there, green onions and he liked the idea of jalapeno cheese, so we went with Monterey Pepper Jack cheese.”

Blake said Your Hometown Deli is going to select a different charity or cause to raise funds for.

“Every month we will have a different charity,” he said. “March was Epilepsy Month and my nephew suffers from epilepsy, so we thought we’d raise funds for epilepsy during the month. So for every kicker sold, we donate $1 towards towards the cause and then Shaun and his wife Erin have decided that they’ll match that donation as well. We’ve found that customers are donating cash more than we’re selling Kickers.”

Blake added for the month of April, they are raising funds for a special run for cancer that his niece is taking part in.
