Home invasion and police assault leads to charges

At approximately 11:44 a.m. yesterday morning members of the community patrol division received a call for service regarding a break and enter in progress on Park Avenue West, Chatham.

Upon arrival officers were informed the male suspect who is known to police fled the area prior to police arrival.

Investigation revealed the suspect had broken into the apartment prior to police being contacted.

While in the apartment he produced a large knife and threatened the cause harm to a party in the apartment. One of the parties in the apartment fled on foot while being pursued by the suspect, which resulted in the suspect being locked outside. He then began pounding at the door attempting to gain entry. The police were contacted at this time.

Members of the community patrol division located the suspect at his residence in Chatham at which time he was placed under arrest. While being placed under arrest a physical altercation ensued resulting in an officer receiving a minor injury to his right hand. The suspect proceeded to kick the rear panel of a police vehicle prior to being transported to police headquarters.

As a result the suspect, a 27 year old Chatham male, has been arrested and charged with Break, Enter and Commit Utter Threats, Breach of Recognizance, Breach of Probation, Assault Peace Officer with Attempt to Resist Arrest and Mischief under $5000.00. He has been held in police custody pending a bail hearing.
