A Mitchell’s Bay woman is back home safe and sound, after a missionary trip to Haiti.
Megan Smith said it was another great experience, after completing her second trip in as many years.
Smith said she was able to being a ton of items to hand out.
“I brought five suit cases down to the orphanage, the kids rifled through and took a ton of stuff that they needed,” she said. “I left them all the diapers, all the wipes… they have four young kids at the orphanage, tons of formula. I was able to buy four sacks of rice, a big sack of beans, two cases of oil and a thing of chicken stock cubes. I separated it into different bags, and separated all the rice into individual family portions.”
Smith said she distributed the items to the people who live in the “tent city” right beside the orphanage.
“I had also made up bags of toiletries… soap, tooth brushes, tooth paste, deodorant and then I made up others for babies and young children with bottles and sippy cups and formula,” she said. “I brought down a suit case full of clothes and stuffed animals… so I distributed that too.”
Smith said she also distributed some items to a village up in the mountains as well.
“It was nice that I was able to buy and give so much, not just to the orphanage but to reach more of the community,” she said. “I was also able to buy a truck load of water for the orphanage.”
Smith said it was difficult to leave, as two of the children at the orphanage wanted to come back to Canada with her in her suitcase.
“I was able to bring so much this time and because I was able to buy all those items and distribute them out… it was really awesome to do all that,” she said. “It was nice to know that I was really, really helping the community. It was nice to go again, but I know I won’t be able to go back for a while, so it was really hard leaving. The situation at the orphanage is not the greatest, so it was hard knowing that I helped them for a week… now they’re going to go back to their dire state. It was a good experience though. It was nice to see the kids, they were really, really excited that I was there.”
