Have you ever wondered how chefs plan meals or menus?

Do you know how your parents plan your menus at home?

The 4H Eberts Lifeskills Club recently learned some of the steps that go into planning a meal and menu along with keeping things healthy and quick.

Looking through magazines and talking about segments of cooking shows on television we realized that everything looked great along with tasting good. Everything was presented nicely on the plate with some great looking dishes. All of the meals were colourful.

When planning a meal you also need to know what your guests like and dislike.

It’s important to have something for everyone.

It’s also helpful to know how many guests you will be cooking for.

Make healthy choices when looking at recipes.

Check for low fat substitutions and other healthy options.

The most important ingredient of planning a meal and cooking for guests is to be organized and have your kitchen in order. It saves a lot of time when you know you have all of the ingredients and the appliances you need are within reach. It’s also helpful to clean up as you go so you have time to visit with guests afterwards.

Impress your guests with a beautiful table setting. You don’t need to use your mom’s fine china when your best friend stays over for supper.

Have fun going to the Dollar Store to find some bright and fancy low cost plates and colourful tableware!
