Baldoon Golf Club in Wallaceburg has an opportunity available for kids to learn the game at a young age.

However, there is only a handful of spaces available.

The Junior Golf Academy is for boys and girls ages four to 12. It’s a six-week program, held every Tuesday at 6 p.m. starting on July 8.

Cost is $50 for the six-week program and there is only space available for 21 kids.

“This is designed just for learning the game of golf,” said Ryan Gurd, the director of golf at Baldoon. “I’ll be taking care of teaching them how to drive the ball, chip and putt, rules and etiquette of the game. At the end of it all, on the final night we’re going to go out and play a few holes, to take whatever I’ve taught them onto the course.”

Gurd said the evenings are divided up.

“For 20 minutes you’ll be driving the ball, another 20 minutes you’ll be learning rules and etiquette, another 20 minutes you’ll be learning chipping and putting,” he said. “We try to keep them from getting bored in one spot… we keep it interesting, we keep them moving, and keep them on their toes.”

Gurd said it’s a fun activity for kids to learn the game.

“They love it,” he said. “They loved hitting the ball, they loved chipping and putting.”
