Never swing a dull axe

Axe

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I was out for a nice morning run recently and heard the sound of a woodpecker.

As I glanced over to take a closer look I saw an interesting sight.

I just happened to be passing a soccer field with light standards and the busy woodpecker was giving the gusto to the metal pole of one of these lights.

I wondered what would be left of the poor little guy’s beak after such an unfortunate miscalculation or if he’d suffer a massive migraine.

It dawned on me that this woodpecker could work as hard as possible and yet gain no advantage.

Does that ever happen to you?

King Solomon said something wise about this subject in Ecclesiastes 10:10: “If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed but skill will bring success.”

If this woodpecker had just scanned the situation over a bit more carefully beforehand he would have picked the right spot to peck for bugs.

All brawn and no brains wouldn’t get him a morsel.

So, are you swinging a dull axe?

It’s amazing how a little bit of planning can go a long way in making tasks seem easier and in turn, saving you from a lot of needless, wasted work.

Plan ahead and you’ll hit the right target the first time.
