Dan Miskokomon elected as new Chief of Walpole Island

Walpole Island has a new leader at the helm.

An election was held on the First Nation reserve this weekend, and the race for the Chief was a close one.

Coming out on top was Dan Miskokomon with 240 votes.

Coming close in second place in the voting was Charles Sampson with 228 votes, with Kennon Johnson taking third place in the voting with 215 votes.

Miskokomon is a former chief of Walpole Island, currently sits on the Indigenous Education Coalition and also works as a consultant.

Twelve local residents were elected to council as well, including:

– Lyle Johnson

– Shirley Tooshkenig

– Muriel Sampson

– Ernest Rex Isaac

– Bill Tooshkenig

– Alan Jacobs

– Ashley Shipman

– Chris Riley

– Roger Williams

– Carl Smith Jr.

– Daintry Kewayosh

The counting of the ballots was done so in accordance with the Indian Band Election Regulations.
