Some improvements could be coming to the Wallaceburg Animal Shelter, thanks to a hefty donation.

An information report to council says administration has received an estate donation in the amount of $73,546.33 to be used specifically for capital improvements to the animal shelter in Wallaceburg.

The Wallaceburg shelter is located at 105 Arnold Street.

Larry Benoit is the contracted dog control provider for Wards 4 and 5, and leases the building from the Municipality.

The staff report indicates the building compliance coordinator completed a building assessment of the property and recommended the following capital improvements:

– Design and build an addition for 5 quarantine kennels at an estimated cost of $45,000

– Improve ventilation/HVAC system in the building at an estimated cost of $15,000

– Miscellaneous improvements such as new washer/dryer, interior painting, upgrade flooring, etc. at an estimated cost of $15,000

“The Manager of Municipal Assets suggests that in order to get accurate numbers for the suggested capital improvements, detailed drawings and specifications would have to be generated in order to properly quote the project,” said Nancy Havens, manager of licensing services in the report.

At this time the funds are being held in a reserve until the future of animal control services is explored, the report states.

The report is set to come before council at their regular meeting on Monday, June 23.
