A former Wallaceburg resident is coming home in July to provide mobile services to prepare wills and power of attorney documents.
Brittany Fish, B.A., J.D., says wills are used when people pass away, while power of attorney documents are used when people are still living.
āThere are two documents, there is a power of attorney for health and there is a power of attorney for property,ā she said. āYour health one is obviously for any decisions medical, living, nutrition, shelter. That is always good if you are elderly, in case you canāt get out and about anymore. Someone can bring you to the doctors, they can help you make medical decisions, they can put you in the nursing home. They will be able to make those decisions for you.ā
Fish added: āIn terms of property. Same thing, if you are elderly, people can actually go to the bank for you. Pay your bills, cash cheques.ā
Fish said a lot of people ask her why they would need these documents while they are young.
āIt is a very good thing to have while you are young,ā she said. āIf you were ever into a car accident or something happened to you medically that was unexpected, you would have someone designated who is the attorney to make decisions for you.ā
She added: āIf you were in a car accident you would have someone designated as your attorney to decide on maybe a surgery you might need if you canāt make that decision on your own. If you were ever in an accident and you were married and you wanted to sell the matrimonial home, they would be able to sign off on your behalf.
āItās good to have that way, if there was ever a scenario you never expected to happen. Your spouse, your son or daughter, or your parents could actually go to your work and pick up your cheques for you, cash them. Take care of your mortgage, things like that.ā
