The senior girls basketball team from Wallaceburg District Secondary School welcomed a new member to the team today, with Progressive Ford taking a spot on the Tartans roster.

The local car dealership brought their “Drive 4UR School” event to the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wallaceburg, all in support of the local squad.

Janine Day, head coach and head of the WDSS athletic department, said at least 100 people came for a test drive, with the hope of raising between $1,000 and $2,000.

She said the team will be busy over the next couple years fundraising for another team trip.

“This past year we took the senior girls basketball team to Disney for a tournament over Christmas,” she said. “Every two years I try to plan a trip so each kid who plays senior girls basketball will get one. So we’re looking forward to 2016 when we go to the Bahamas. Take the senior girls teams, go on a trip to the Bahamas, have a tournament, visit the school in the Bahamas and then do some fun stuff like swimming with dolphins.”

Day added: “Terri Bechard, who is the manager for the girls basketball program at WDSS, she works at Progressive Ford. She was able to talk with them about a fundraising opportunity for us with the basketball team. The parents and the players looking to go on that trip. It was a good day, we had some test driving and a barbecue. Just a good fundraiser all around.”

Day said they have a car wash planned on Aug 23rd at Home Hardware in Wallaceburg as well.

“We’re just doing continuous fundraising events over the course of the next months and see how much we can fundraise for the girls basketball team,” she said.
