St. Clair River symposium coming up

contest2

The Binational Public Advisory Council (BPAC) for the St. Clair River is hosting the second in its series of binational symposiums as part of the initiative to delist the St. Clair River Area of Concern. The first symposium was held in Sarnia 2012.

“The St. Clair River: Bridging the Environment and Economy” will be held Thursday, September 18th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Port Huron, Michigan (adjacent and south of the Bluewater Bridge). The event is free, but pre-registration is required.

This symposium will provide the public, industry representatives and volunteer organizations with an excellent opportunity to hear a diversity of experts from both sides of the border who are working to improve the river ecosystem and watershed.

The symposium keynote speaker is John Austin, creator and director of the Great Lakes Economic Initiative for the Brookings Institution. This report directly shaped the region’s economic development agenda leading to a U.S. federal support for Great Lakes clean-up and restoration, and regional understanding and actions to build economic momentum for the Great Lakes and water resources.

Registration is required by August 25 and seating is limited.

The St. Clair River is one of forty-three waterways throughout the Great Lakes where action is needed to clean up pollution, known as an Area of Concern. The St. Clair River was listed as an Area of Concern in 1985 by the U.S. and Canadian governments because of significant pollution problems; and still remains an Area of Concern today.

In 1988, the St. Clair River BPAC formed to oversee the restoration of the river and to advise government agencies on measures needed to clean up and eventually delist the river as an Area of Concern.
