Chatham-Kent Public Health offers FREE food handler training courses.

Becoming a certified food handler is a great idea.

It can prevent food poisoning. It can enhance your business’ reputation.

It can also make you more in demand to potential employers.

Each course runs over a 3-week period totalling 9 hours. A course manual and probe thermometer is provided. After passing the exam, you will become a certified food handler.

Certification is good for 5 years.

Food poisoning can lead to severe illness and sometimes death.

It is estimated that 1 in 3 Canadians suffer from food poisoning every year.

Food handler training provides food handlers with the basic skills needed to identify and reduce the risks linked to food poisoning.

Research shows that food handler training improves food handler behaviour, and in turn, increases the inspection scores of restaurants.

It’s not just restaurant staff that can benefit from this training. Most food poisoning is a result of food improperly prepared at home. So if you make food for others – whether at home or in a restaurant – this course is for you!

Course topics covered include: public health legislation, the role of the public health inspector, types and causes of foodborne illness, safe food handling methods and food premises sanitation.

This information helps the food handler to store, prepare, cook and serve food safely.

Sign up for a course held monthly at the CK Public Health office in Chatham.
