Back to school today!

It is back-to-school today across the region!

The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to wish all the kids going to school this morning a safe, fun and memorable school year.

Just a reminder to all motorists that there will be an increase in traffic and pedestrians, especially young children out on our streets today.

Please reduce your speed in the area of cross walks and school zones, remember
slower is safer.

With school buses back on the road, all drivers must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights and stop arm flashing, regardless of the speed limit or number of lanes. Motorists failing to comply may be issued a minimum fine of $400 and six demerit points.

Back to school safety is a community effort.

Let’s make the 2014-2015 school year here in Chatham-Kent a safe one.

The Lambton OPP sent out some safety tips as well.

Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers will again be quite visible during their patrols of the area’s 24 elementary schools and two secondary schools, as the summer break comes to an end and the students and staff return.

With the obvious increase in pedestrian, and, vehicle traffic, Lambton OPP will be active on the roads leading to the schools and the attached parking lots. Focus will be on matters that relate to vehicle rate of speed, aggressive driving, distracted driving and proper attention and care to school buses and pedestrian traffic in the school zones.

It is also important for students arriving on foot or bicycle to remember their rules as well, when being assisted by crossing guards, facing stop signs, loading and unloading of the buses, and, using cross-walks or traffic signal intersections in and around the schools.

Arrival time, lunch break, and, departure time at the various schools will be of interest to the OPP but those times do not limit how often parents, teachers and students will see the officers. In 2013, Lambton OPP carried out the same type of successful patrols to ensure public safety and traffic compliance.

Welcome back everyone.

Stay safe.
