Changes being proposed for childcare services

Faced with a $1.4 million per year funding decrease from the provincial government, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Children’s Services division is recommending some changes to its service delivery methods.

A report, available on the municipal website Thursday, September 18, will go to Council on Monday, September 22, 2014.

It will describe the funding decrease, changes made to date and recommending a change in service delivery.

Moving from municipally delivered service in two locations – May Court Childcare Learning Centre in Chatham and Wallaceburg Childcare Learning Centre in Wallaceburg – to purchase of service agreements with non-profit providers would help to save funds in order to maintain more service all across Chatham-Kent.

“With these changes, we would be able to maintain the same number of childcare spaces for our community, rather than reducing the number of subsidized spaces,” stated Lucy Brown, General Manager of Health and Family Services in a press release. “We intend to work with our community partners in childcare to ensure a smooth transition for affected children and families.”

Reports say job losses are likely.

  1. Perhaps more overpriced municipal employees with full pensions need to be reviewed as the rest of us living in the real world (private sector) do not have such lavish compensation. REMEMBER THIS when you vote!!!!!!!!!!!!
