Gas leak in Wallaceburg

A “locate error” has led to a gas leak in Wallaceburg.

Construction crews outside of an apartment complex on Westcourt Boulevard confirmed with the Sydenham Current that a gas line was hit at around 1:35 p.m. while construction work was taking place.

The sound of the leak and the smell of the gas was evident at the scene at around 3 p.m.

The workers told us that Union Gas crews were called in and were busy fixing the problem.

The workers said there was no reason for residents to be concerned.

“They haven’t told us to evacuate,” one worker said.

Workers told us testing was being conducted by Union Gas to determine how much gas was leaked into the air.

Tenants in the area said many people inside the apartment complex were concerned and many experienced headaches.

“The sound of the gas leak was so loud we could hear it inside, and we live across the square,” one tenant said. “Gas was still pouring out at 2:35 p.m., and there was no fire department or notice to stay inside.”

We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.

Here are some photos from the scene:
