First degree murder charges laid in Leamington

On October 21, 2012, members of the Essex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision that had occurred on Talbot Street in Leamington Ontario

Officers at the scene discovered a pickup truck had left the roadway and subsequently struck a building. Two people inside the vehicle were injured.

On October 27, 2012, Edward Witt 55 years from Windsor Ontario, a passenger in the vehicle, succumbed to injuries he sustained in the collision.

Members of the Essex County Crime Unit under the direction of Detective Inspector Chris Avery with the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) commenced a lengthy and extensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

As a result, members of the Essex County OPP have now arrested and charged Andrew Cowan 42 years, from Leamington Ontario with one count of First Degree Murder contrary to Section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

He will appear in Windsor Court on Monday, October 27, 2014.
