Mapping out Canadian energy at Holy Family

Holy Family Catholic School in Wallaceburg teamed up with National Geographic to help Grade 5 students learn more about energy across Canada.

Gloria Grieve, principal at Holy Family said a giant floor map (35’ by 26’) is on loan from National Geographic and was set up today (Nov. 4) for the students to take part in 10 activities related to Canada’s energy landscape.

Grieve said the students will learn about the complex transmission lines that crisscross across Canada along with exploring the countries power generation stations, oil refineries, wind farms and more.

“They have centres that they are working on, then they will be responsible for teaching the rest of the students… it’s pretty awesome,” she said. “They are using the Chrome Books for some research.”

Janice Prangley, Grade 5 teacher, said the students were broken down into groups.

“One group is doing watersheds in Canada… which bodies of water are the main resources for energy,” she said. “They are outlining them with those chains and the pylons are the actual water flow, how it is working and how it uses energy.”

Lindsay Chambers, Grade 4/5 teacher at Holy Family, added “another group is working on energy sources, so they’re locating places in Canada where the different sources are located… we have solar, wind, bio-mass.”

Grieve said their school received an e-mail about the program and simply communicated back with National Geographic to get the map and materials sent to Wallaceburg.
