Throwback Thursday: The ‘Lucknow’ sinks in Wallaceburg

This weeks Throwback Thursday takes us back to the days of the Lucknow.

It measured 120ft. by 19ft 256 tons and is shown in the photo in Midland Harbour.

Here is what we know about the Lucknow:

– Bulit in 1870 as International, renamed Onaping 1887.

– Built in Saginaw, Michigan wood hull.

– Chartered by Wallaceburg Sand and gravel Co. from Burkes Welding Co. Midland On.

– Pulled Great Western for Wallaceburg Sand and gravel Co. 1924 season.

– Sunk in ice at Wallaceburg 1924, hull in poor condition, used one season in Wallaceburg and returned to owners late 1924.

Thank you to Mark Child’s and The Black Goose Grill for lending us this great shot before they frame it and hang it up. Mark tells us it is from Al Mann’s collection.

If you have a collection of old photos from the area – feel free to drop us a line (or picture) at dana@sydenhamcurrent.ca.Lucknow
