Ice fishing season gearing up

As the deep freeze continues to hit the province this week, the ice on local waterways is starting to thicken as well.

Dave McCready, owner of Ed’s Bait in Wallaceburg, said ice fishing has already begun on Mitchell’s Bay.

“The ice is really just starting, reports are 3-5 inches as of yesterday,” McCready said. “This weekend will be the first real test of the ice. I just hope they keep the machines off for just a little longer and let it get a bit thicker out there.”

McCready said people have already been venturing out on the Bay.

“I would suggest a spud, just to check the ice ahead of you as you walk, but guys have already been going out the last couple days,” he said.

“A few guys have hunted down some nice Lake St. Clair jumbo perch, but took some work to find them. This is all just off the bay front, I am still waiting for reports from the middle grounds, between the Bay Marina and Bass Haven and Pintail, to the right of Bass Haven.”

McCready said ice fishing on the Sydenham River might be able to get started next week.

There is “two inches on the Sydenham at the Tile Yard, so I hope guys can get out there for some walleye next week,” McCready said.

An employee at Mitchell’s Bay Variety told the Sydenham Current that some people have been fishing already, but the season is just getting started.

“It should be busy this weekend,” they said.
