Jurors began hearing testimony yesterday (January 6) in a Sarnia courtroom concerning a 2012 murder that took place on Walpole Island.
Naanan Mackenzie Williams, 22, is charged with the second-degree murder of his 50-year-old great uncle Clifford Riley.
Riley’s body was found on the side of River Road, north of Firehall Road, on Walpole Island on the morning of June 22, 2012.
Williams is accused of stomping Riley on the chest to death.
The Sarnia Observer reported that a key witness in the trial will be Denzel Neron.
The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to kicking Riley on the day he died and for keeping information from police.
Neron, a first-time offender, had been charged with second-degree murder in the case as well, but those charges were withdrawn after he pleaded guilty to the other offences.
He was sentenced to four months in jail.
Williams’ trial is expected to continue for several weeks.
