Garbage bag limit being reduced

Some changes are about to come into effect for what, and how much garbage is collected in Wallaceburg, Dresden and all of Chatham-Kent.

The changes stem from the 2013 service review process, when council approved the implementation of a three bag limit as part of the new curbside waste collection program in 2015.

The new bag limit comes into effect on Monday, January 19.

“In order to comply with the new limit we are encouraging you to recycle as much as possible and use the larger municipal recycling boxes designed for the current 2-stream curbside recycling program,” the municipal website states.

“All residential properties will have a three bag/item limit per week. All institutional, commercial or industrial properties (including condominiums and multi-residential properties with six or more dwelling units), shall not exceed 2.0 cubic metres or 24 bags and/or items per week.”

Along with the bag limit, there are also some changes being implemented for what the garbage collectors in Chatham-Kent will not be picking up.

“E-waste and used tires will no longer be collected at the curb,” the municipal website states.

“E-Waste is the fastest growing source of waste and is quickly filling up landfills. Lead, mercury, etc. are found in most equipment, increasing risks to human health and the environment.”

Chatham-Kent is hoping to divert the following e-waste products from landfills:

– Amplifiers and speakers

– Audio & video players and records (DVD & VCR)

– Cameras/cell phones

– Computers and peripherals

– Fax machines/copiers

– Monitors

– Pagers and PDA’s

– Printers and scanners

– Radios/televisions

– Receivers, tuners and turntables

– Telephone and answering machines

– Video Projectors

Free recycling programs now exist locally for electronic/electrical products and rimless used tires.

Visit the nearest transfer station or contact a local company that sells that product for disposal options.
