A power outage is effecting parts of Walpole Island, after a tree knocked out some power lines.
The Arena Hall at the Walpole Island Sports Complex has also been set up as an emergency warming centre.
Walpole Island officials will be open all night for community members affected by the power outage, which is effecting residents on River Road South, Creek Road South, Altiman Road, and Squirrel Island.
“It is going to be very cold out tonight so please check in on elders, family, and community members,” the Walpole Island First Nation Council stated on their Facebook page. “If your power is out remember to leave your water running just a trickle to avoid your pipes freezing.”
Hydro One officials said power is expected to be restored by midnight.
About 124 customers are effected, Hydro One officials said.
Crews are working on fixing the problem.
The forecast for tonight will see a low dipping down to minus 20, with a chill making it feel more like minus 27.
The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit has issued an extreme cold weather alert as well.
