Celebrating and embracing the big 5-0

happy birthday

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I hit one of those milestone birthdays today – 50!

I must be honest and say that I haven’t really been losing much sleep over this date, as others do when they reach the half-century mark.

I have enjoyed my life up to this point and have seen the Lord bring many blessings to me along the way.

My Bible says in Malachi 3:6 that the Lord does not change.

If He was faithful to look after me in the first 50 years of my life, then I know He’s good for the next 50, too!

Sure, younger guys are beating me to the soccer ball more often on Tuesday nights, and the gray hairs are starting to crop up a little more often on my cranium, but overall life is great.

Recently, my wife and I were standing in our living room and looking at the big framed print of our wedding photo.

I joked and asked her if she knew either of the two kids in the picture.

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since that picture-perfect fall day when we exchanged our vows but God has remained the same throughout.

He has walked with us through ups and downs and the raising of five wonderful children.

Turning 50 is simply one more stepping stone on the path that God has me on in the adventure of this life.

It is not a time to fret that the pile of hourglass sands are bigger on the bottom, or to regret that time already past wasn’t spent as wisely as it should have been.

No, I am choosing to turn 50 with one eye of gratitude on the years that got me here and the other on the future experiences the Lord will give me with what’s remaining.

It’s all good with God!
