‘A good name is more desirable than great riches’

A few weeks ago a judge in France gave a ruling banning a set of parents from naming their newborn daughter, ‘Nutella’.

He said the name, which comes from a trademarked name for a chocolate spread, would lead to teasing and disparaging thoughts and was not in the child’s best interests.

The parents failed to show up for their court appearance, and in their absence, the judge named the little girl ‘Ella’.

The Bible talks about the importance of having a good name, or more importantly, a good reputation.

Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.”

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph, husband of Mary, he informed Joseph that the boy in Mary’s womb was to be called ‘Jesus’, a name that means “God saves”.

Our Saviour certainly lived up to the meaning of His name!

My name, Brian, means to be ‘strong in virtue’.

I needs lots of help from the Lord on some days just to make the grade.

Have you ever thought about the meaning of your name?

It might be interesting to search that out and see what character trait it represents.

Regardless, though, of the meaning of your name, the most important thing is to have a good name or reputation with God and with others.

That, the Bible says, is more desirable than great riches.
