Letter: Please take away ‘big blue’

blue garbage totes

I called Public works before the big blue garbage totes were delivered, saying “thank you, but no”.

They had my name, address and phone number, but still I managed to receive big blue.

I left a polite message immediately after seeing the $75 beast on my driveway, asking them to come get it.

I waited a few days and called back again, talking to a gentlemen who took my info and officially put my address on the “return” list.

From the sound and tone of his voice, he was used to taking these types of calls.

Unfortunately he did not know when it would be picked up as it was a private company doing this.

What an unfortunate answer.

Let’s get this straight… the winning contract holder to deliver and pick up big blue can not advise when they will pick these up.

Seems like a pretty simple straight forward scheduling task – trucks, man power, workable hours.

Am I missing something?

I was advised to ensure big blue was out front and easily accessible for pick up, or it could get missed.

I have two legal-type questions for anyone out there that may know a thing or two about this.

1) The idea of dropping off property at someone’s residence with a note saying. Please use this and I will bill you for it later… just seems wrong to me. They certainly know that a certain percentage of people will forget to call or not read the terms. Is this legal or ethical?

2) This big ugly blue thing is still on my front walk in front of house, like many others. Considering I have made three requests to not have this, and it has been an eye sore on my property for more than nine days now, can I consider it abandoned property and have it removed, sold, thrown out, towed away, etc.?

  1. I agree Todd! This whole escapade has been poorly executed! We were lucky enough to catch them as they were delivering and told them to NOT leave it. What happens if it is stolen from your yard while you wait for someone to pick it up? Who then is responsible? I do have a point I would like to bring up – Why do we as tax payers have to pay for this to make progressive’s job easier? Does progressive pay for things to make any of our jobs easier? IF this is mandatory to have, than Progressive should have to pay for it.

  2. This is just so they can reduce their manpower. When did we need a reduction in “blue collar” jobs?

  3. We didn’t even get a note explaining anything about the bins or the contract of it. we do, however plan on keeping it, but are we note suppose to get some sort or pamphlet or note explaining the program, what it cost, and when the trial period is over, or when the payment is due?

  4. I had to rent a tote like this for my restaurant a few years a go when I owned Slim Jim’s found it very handy held a weeks worth of garbage and kept the crows, racoons, mice ,cats and dogs out of the garbage. If it was damaged the company repaired it free. this past winter the crows were gathering in great numbers looking for free lunch like in Chatham quit being negative use the thing and keep Wallaceburg clean

  5. … if you don’t want it I’d love to have it in Port Lambton. How they ran the distribution etc. might be dubious but the bins aren’t ugly, seem to be very practical, and are in use most everyplace else. Come on Wallaceburg..get over it.

  6. It’s not as much of an eyesore as the ripped open garbage bags and tipped-over pails that are all too common in CK.

Try not being difficult and just use the damn thing.

  7. Google the Consumer Protection Act — it clearly states if something is dropped off unsolicited, you are not obligated to purchase and you cannot be billed for it — it is yours to use or throw away.
