Some residents on Walpole Island are concerned about the recently announced hike in prices at the local ferry.

Starting today (April 22) fares for passenger vehicles are rising from $7 to $10 to cross the St. Clair River one way.

The 43% hike in price only applies to passenger cars, according to the the Walpole-Algonac Ferry website.

However, multiple Walpole Island residents said they received a letter in the mail stating that the cost for “Status Indians” will be $10 round-trip, while the cost for “Non-Status Indians” will be $10 one way, resulting in a $20 round trip.

A Walpole Island resident, who asked us not to include their name in the story, said the crew who works on the ferry is upset.

“The captains and crew are very upset over this hike,” the resident said.

“They believe it’s going to hurt our ferry business really bad… (possibly) to the point we could lose our ferry crossing. They went to the board and Chief, but no one wants to listen.”

People on social media are expressing their concern as well.

“Unfortunately, the ferry isn’t going to get enough business from band members to survive,” Erin wrote. “People off-reserve are not going to pay extra to come cross at our ferry.”

“It would be a shame to lose the ferry for everyone,” Doris wrote. “This community needs support from outside the community as well as from inside the community. Anyone passing through will stop buy chips maybe gas maybe coffee and lunch. Having the ferry operating in a profitable manner is good for everyone.”

I love this community and have always supported the businesses and will continue to support the ferry,” wrote
Nanette. “I pray and hope our ferry business continues.”

The Sydenham Current has left messages with Walpole Island First Nation officials.

We will provide more information when it becomes available.
