A rookie councillor from Chatham wants to see improved communication in Chatham-Kent.

Coun. Brock McGregor will be seeking council support when he brings forward his notice of motion at Monday’s (April 27) council meeting.

“Effective communication involves applying current trends in marketing and communication strategies and platforms,” McGregor said.

Recognizing that Chatham-Kent continues to pursue opportunities to engage the public, McGregor said he wants administration to provide recommendations outlining a strategy to improve public communication of council initiatives.

McGregor said he wants staff to investigate a number of items, including:

– A social media strategy for communication of municipal governance issues prior to, during, and after council meetings.

– The development of a database of publicly available summaries of council proceedings, searchable by topic.

– The re-development of a publically available upcoming events calendar for agenda items, updated with background information as it becomes available and tentatively scheduled agenda items.

– Consideration of quarterly or semi-annual municipal updates available in multiple formats

– An ongoing plan to re-evaluate and modify communication strategy, including opportunities for community input.

McGregor said he’d like to see the report no later than October 2015.

  1. Social Media is VITAL to ANY marketing strategy today. The world is becoming more and more connected, and having a properly built presence online can be a huge tool to promoting.

Consider the fact that CK is all but ignored by the rest of the province, a better built marketing strategy is key to getting those who control the $$$ see how much there is to offer in CK so that can begin to invest in the area again.
