A Wallaceburg councillor did not wait long to bring the topic of municipal governance back to the council table.

A week after a notice-of-motion by Chatham Coun. Derek Robertson was shot down –  where $20,000 would have be spent on a consultant to examine the size of council and to adjust the ward boundaries –  Carmen McGregor is taking a crack at gathering council support to possibly expand Wallaceburg’s boundaries.

“The municipality continues to pursue opportunities for fair council representation for all communities and interests,” McGregor said at Monday’s (April 27) meeting.

“The citizens on the urban fringe of Wallaceburg within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent have shown great interest in further investigation of the structure of its ward boundaries.”

Wallaceburg’s rookie councillor said she wants administration to provide recommendations to council outlying a strategy to re-evaluate the current ward structure in regards to the “urban fringe” of Wallaceburg.

“This report will examine changing the ward’s boundary to include the residents residing on the abutting areas of Ward 5, where there is evidence that the residents interests may be better identified by joining the ward,” McGregor said.

McGregor said she hopes the report will include any benefits or changes that might occur for the residents, including changes to their tax assessment.

This report is to be returned to council no later than June 22, McGregor said.

McGregor’s motion will be discussed and voted on at the upcoming May 4 meeting.
