Canadians will have some extra time to file their income tax returns this year, after a an error by the Canadian Revenue Agency.

“On April 24, the CRA issued a communication to some Canadians that referred to an incorrect filing deadline for 2014 tax returns of May 5, 2015, rather than April 30, 2015. The CRA takes full responsibility for the error and our first priority is to ensure that no Canadian is negatively affected,” the Canadian Revenue Agency said in a statement.

“As a result, and at Minister Findlay’s request, 2014 tax returns filed by midnight on May 5, 2015, will not incur interest or penalties. The CRA sincerely regrets and apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.”

Tax preparers across Canada received a notice in their inbox this week about the situation.

However for self-employed individuals and their spouses or common-law partners, the deadline to file their 2014 income tax and benefit returns remains midnight on June 15 and any balance owing is still due by April 30.

Although, no interest will be charged on any amount owing for 2014 during the period from April 30 up to and including May 5.
