The A.A. Wright Wildcats have come up big for the Wallaceburg food bank.

Allison Kelly, Grade 6 teacher at A.A. Wright Public School, said the student-led initiative was a huge success.

“We were talking about areas of need in our community and we touched on food and how food was not only a local issue, but a global issue,” Kelly told the Sydenham Current.

“So they decided they wanted to find out how to get involved on the local level.”

Kelly said Gerri St. Pierre at the Salvation Army came and did a presentation with the kids.

“She told us what the Salvation Army does in our community and how helpful they are,” Kelly said. “From there they decided that they were going to organize and run the food drive.”

Kaylea Sands, a student in Kelly’s class, said gathering the food became a weekly task.

“We did this every week on Friday we would go to the classes and we would pick up boxes and how many canned food they had in the box we would write it on a graph,” Sands said.

Kelly added it was Ms. Pieta’s Grade 2/3 class that collected and brought in the most amount of food items.

“They get some pizza donated from S&J’s and a movie from Movie Time so Pietas, she said.

“My class has had experience of getting involved and helping their community.”
