A rate increase is coming to the Walpole Island Ferry, but not as drastic as originally planned.

Ferry officials announced today that effective June 8, there will be a rate increase in fares.

“The new one-way rates for passenger cars will be $8, and new foot passenger rates will be $1.50,” Ferry officials said in a statement.

“The Walpole-Algonac Ferry prides itself on providing the highest level of service and safety, and we will continue to provide that service while keeping our rates competitive into the future.”

“The ferry operation is governed by a corporate board of directors,” Ferry officials stated.

“The board and the Walpole Island Council are committed to working together to identify and implement options for continuous improvement and success of the corporation. The ferry is near and dear to the hearts of our members. It is an important link that connects us to the U.S. side of our traditional territory, where we are actively working to build relationships. The ferry is and will continue to be a key piece in the maintenance of our border crossing rights, affirmed by the St. Anne Island Treaty of 1796 and the Jay Treaty.”

The one-way fare for vehicle traffic was set to rise to $10 on April 22, however the decision was reserved the day before the changes were set to take effect.

James Jenkins, political advisor to Walpole Island’s chief and council, told the Sydenham Current last month that a corporate assessment of the ferry was still underway.
