Rain dampers Wolverines ball tourney

Western Counties U15 baseball team advanced to the Semi Finals of the Kevin Siddall Invitational Bantam tournament hosted by the Windsor Stars but once again the rain ended the Wolverines tournament.

The Wolverines started the tournament with an 8-2 win over the North York Blues. Drew Pepper picked up the victory throwing 4 innings giving up just 1 run and 3 hits while striking out 3. Greg Hay had 3 hits, Connor Goldsmith, and Evan Rogers each had 2 hits while singles went to Kyle Blunt, Xavier Jamieson and Jacob Breault.

Wolverines next opponent was the Riverside Royals. Kyle Blunt threw a complete game and the Wolverines came out on top with a 13-3 decision in six innings. Grant Spence lead the Wolverine attack with 2 doubles while Connor Goldsmith had a double and single and Jake taylor picked up 2 hits.

In the Quarter Finals the Wolverines were matched up against the Walker Homesites Majors. In this game the teams traded the lead five times before the Wolverines were able to take control in the fifth inning and came away with a 9-4 victory. Joel Pavey picked up the win in relief of injured starter Jake Taylor while Greg Hay picked up the save. Drew Pepper and Jake Taylor each had 2 hits while Dillon Timperly, Xavier Jamieson, Evan Rogers, Pavey and Goldsmith each picked up a hit.

The Semi Final opponent was the Vaughan Vikings. Greg Hay got the start and pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings before hitting his pitch limit for the day. Drew Pepper and Grant Spence tried to help out Hay but some timely errors and 4 hits later the Wolverines found themselves in a 6-0 hole heading to the bottom of the seventh. The Wolverines started to mount the comeback scoring 5 runs and with 2 out and a runner on first the rains came in a halted the tournament. Kyle Blunt lead the Wolverine bats with 2 hits while Jake Taylor, Grant Spence and Drew Pepper all had a hit.

Next action for the Wolverines will host the Stratford Major Bantams in a double header Saturday June 20th in Courtright at noon then Sunday back in Chatham to face the Walker Homesites Majors starting at 11AM
