Wallaceburg walking bridge re-opens

After three months of construction, the Wallaceburg walking bridge has re-opened to the public.

The bridge opened up late last week, after the project started back in April.

Chatham-Kent staff said there were a couple of hiccups discovered along the way, but the project was wrapped up very close to the anticipated target date.

“There (were) additional repairs needed on the abutment that delayed the work by just over a week. The abutment repairs were unforeseen work that was necessary for the safety of the public,” said Miguel Pelletier, director of Public Works, in an e-mail.

Brian Chambers, the building site supervisor for McLean Taylor, said in April that the target date for completion was June 26.

A service review by the municipality in 2013 listed the L.O. Stonehouse Memorial Walk Bridge as one of many that were to be shut down.

The community rallied together when this news spread.

Petitions were created, signatures gathered and people came forward in support of keeping the bridge in the community.

McLean Taylor Construction Ltd. was awarded the tender for the walking bridge project for $540,419.07.
