Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-law

council_logoOn June 30, 2015 Nancy Havens, the Manager of Licensing Services, proposed new policy implications to the Mayor and Members of Council.

The purpose of this proposal is to have a single, comprehensive and harmonized by-law respecting the keeping and control of animals will provide for more effective protection of public safety and quality of life which supports Council’s vision for Chatham-Kent and the Corporate Strategic Plan.

Some of the public’s questions asked during this meeting included topics such as:

How will you deal with feral cats?
Who makes that call on potentially dangerous dog?
Why are skunks on the prohibited list?
Why can’t we walk a lizard on a leash in public?

Some of the items the public wants to see change are as follows:

1. Owning anything with poison, venom or toxin is ridiculous; Exclude all animals that possess venom or poison in captivity that can medically harm a human.
2. There should be support to have chickens in an urban area.
3. No licence should be required for a dog which is the care of trainer, rescuer or foster intending to rehome the dog in a timely manner.
